The Galungan ceremony is a significant Hindu festival celebrated in Bali, Indonesia, marking the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil). It’s a time when Balinese Hindus commemorate the return of ancestral spirits to the earth and seek blessings for prosperity and harmony. During this ten-day festival, elaborate offerings are made at temples and family compounds, and colorful bamboo poles known as “penjor” are erected along streets. These Penjor symbolize Mount Agung, the most sacred mountain in Bali. The ceremony is characterized by various rituals, including prayers, traditional dances, and feasting. However, the celebration also involves spiritual reflection and introspection. So, while Galungan is a joyful occasion filled with festivities, it also holds deep spiritual significance for the Balinese Hindu community.
